FOR
THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING OUR ORDER The
purpose of the RAOB is often freely described as 'The pursuit of
brotherhood". Our conception of brotherhood is firmly based on the family
principle, that the total power and strength of the family shall be available to
the individual in accordance with his need. We believe, because of our own
experience, in the joy and satisfaction to be found in sharing the burden of our
associates and in helping them to solve the many human problems that occur. We
are the Grand Lodge of England. Membership of a lodge within the order is open
to all adult males without distinction as to social position, religious faiths
or political beliefs but, prior to being accepted, a candidate has to convince
members of the order that he is a loyal citizen and that he is genuinely
desirous of taking part in our work on the basis of giving to the extent of his
power in cash or in service, whatever is required to meet the needs of a less
fortunate brother or the dependant widow and children of a deceased brother. The
basic contribution is given in the form of a registration fee on each attendance at a lodge, which is used for the maintenance of our
benevolent work and for administration. At Grand lodge level these funds are
used to cover most contingencies that affect mankind, and include:- annuities
and grants, Birthday and Christmas gifts, educational and merit awards, holidays
and savings accounts, all allocated according to need. Our other main benevolent
activity are the convalescent homes that we maintain at Harrogate and Paignton,
Devon for members and for the Wife or other female relative solely dependent on
the member. The
social side of our order is based within the Minor Lodge, the unit with which
you will, at the time of acceptance, be most concerned. It is as varied as the
personalities and positions of our membership. There are no rules in this sector
of buffaloism except to remember that you are meeting on equal terms, as members
of the same family, and the atmosphere and entertainment will be as good as YOU
make it. Each
Minor Lodge supports its own charities, which tend to be local. Funds are raised
to support these at each meeting, and with your help more can be given. We can
keep you busy. A full life depends on good health and happiness. We understand
the economics of these two valuable human necessities and play our part in
securing and maintaining them for all to whom we owe our fidelity. For further
information please talk to one of our members, then it is your decision. If
there is doubt in your mind, don't come in. It will not be held against you; the
man to whom we find no joy is the one who comes in, pledges his honour to
participate and then walks out because he "doesn't like it". We would like to welcome YOU into our order
